Algeciras is the port city of Andalusia, in southern Spain. The city is located at the Bay of Gibraltar. The Port of Algeciras is one of the busiest in the world. Many people who are on the way to the African continent pass this city. There are regular ferry connections to Tangier and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in Morocco.

Through her daily connection with Morocco the town has many Arabic influences. Directional signs are often in Spanish and Arabic. In the backstreets are many traditional Moroccan tea shops. Algeciras is not really a beautiful city, but it breathes the atmosphere of a busy port.

The Plaza Alta is the charming and buzzing heart of Algeciras. In the centre of the square you will find a Neo-Mudéjar fountain from 1930 surrounded by palm trees. At the square you will find the 18th century baroque church of Our Lady of Palma and the smaller Lady Aurora church. Two churches worth to visit.

The Municipal museum is located in the Acacias Park. It has exhibitions about the Roman period, with art and artifacts from that era. It also gives an insight of the commercial importance of the Bay of Algeciras. Have a stroll around the park as well as it is quite a charming place.

What you should do is take the bus from Algeciras to La Linea, a ride of 40 minutes. Walk across the border and you are in Gibraltar where you can climb the famous rock and have great views of the bay and the Mediterranean Sea.

And why not have a trip to Tangier, Morocco. The trip does not take longer than an hour. Then you are in Africa, with very different cultures, customs, food, and much more. In Tangier, you can take a walk at the

local market and the Medina. If you want there are guides available to explain attraction in English. Do something different and drink peppermint tea or smoke a real nagileh (hookah). Sitting on a carpet you feel finally like another person, a real Arab.

Other cities you can visit in the area are Cordóba, Torremolinos, Málaga and Marbella.
