Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Morocco and the Western Sahara. The Canary Islands consist of thirteen islands. Seven large ones: El Hierro, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, La Gomera, La Palma, Lanzarote and Tenerife and another six samller islands, including Isla de Lobos and Graciosa. The region has two official capitals: Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The Canary Islands have a population of 1,127,000 inhabitants.

The trade winds from the Sahara ensure that there is always a pleasant subtropical climate in the Canary Islands. Rainfall: Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are quite dry. On the mountainous islands, it rains often at the northern half.

The Canary Islands attract millions of tourists who come for the beaches, attractions, climate and above all the natural beauty of the islands. Especially Gran Canaria and Tenerife are popular for their beaches. La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera attract more tourists looking for a nature holiday.

Popular beaches on Tenerife are Playa de las Americas, Los Cristiaonos and Las Gallettas. Boat trips, cruises, snorkeling, and scuba diving, surfing and underwater safaris are there for your entertainment.

San Cristóbal is a nice old city with many historical buildings and museums. Art and culture are displayed in the Casa Ossuna Museum and the Museum of Concepción.

Whoever is interested in the Guanche culture can visit the Museum de la Naturaleza y el Hombre in Santa Cruz where mummies and archaeological finds are exhibited.

The Casa de Colon in the historic Vegueta in Gran Canaria has an overview of the art and culture of the last centuries of the Canary Islands.

The dry landscape and nearly 300 volcanoes on Lanzarote create a moonscape image. A walk or a bus tour through the Timanfaya National Park is a must. The volcanoes, lava fields and geysers will show you to better stay away from the interior of the earth.

Fuerteventura has its beautiful beaches and water sports. Its natural beauty shows in the form of a dramatic volcanic area, dotted with small white villages, windmills and palm trees.

La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma are a paradise for nature lovers. Volcanoes and rainforests in a beautiful mountainous area provide many opportunities for hikers and climbers to enjoy themselves.
