Castell Gala Dali

Castell Gala Dali in Púbol was the home of the surrealist painter Salvador Dali and his wife Gala. In 1969 Dali bought this castle in Púbol for his wife Gala. The exterior of the castle is still in the original style, while the interior has been altered in a sober, mysterious and eccentric house. Gala died in 1982 and was buried in a tomb in the castle. Dali lived here till a fire led him to move to Figueres, where he died in 1989.

The Castell Gala Dali is opened for the public in 1996 to admire the medieval building and the artistic works of Salvador Dali. The theme of the temporary exhibition this year is the third dimension. Title: 3D. Dali and holography: virtual reality and the illusion of actuality.

There are two works by Dali shown: Alice Cooper's Brain of 1973 and Gala and Dali painting from 1973-74. Furthermore there is a short film on the creation of the latter painting.

The castle exudes a strong Gothic and Romanesque dignity and reflects within its furniture and decor the taste of the surrealist master. When Dali bought the castle in 1969 it was in poor condition, with collapsed ceilings, cracked walls and a neglected garden.

Dali had it restored but not in a way that you would normally expect from a restoration. The ruin-like appearance was left intact, so that the effects of the passage of time can still be seen. Inside the old impression is completely turned into a mysterious and sober environment with areas of considerable beauty.

You have to come and see this miracle and will definitely not be disappointed. The castle offers surprises in every room and every corner. A trip to Púbol to see this is very worthwhile, but do not forget to include a visit to the Dali Museum in Figueres and Portlligat
