Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca (the "White Coast") situated between Javea and Cartagena is one of the main tourist destinations in the Mediterranean and has some of the best Spanish beaches.

Alicante is the main city on the Costa Blanca and Benidorm is the most popular holiday destination.

The Costa Blanca boasts miles of gently sloping beaches. The beaches are very popular with the public and among the best on the Spanish coast. Alicante, Benidorm, Denia, Javea, Calpe and Torrevieja are the best beach resorts with good accommodation on the Costa Blanca.

In the Marina Alta district, near the towns of Denia and Javea beaches are smaller and more secluded. Many resorts offer sailing, surfing and water skiing lessons and opportunity for scuba diving.

Costa Blanca's cuisine is mainly based on rice, combined with all kinds of fish and shellfish, chicken and ham. Keep in mind that in many dishes spices are used like dried or fresh peppers. Inland, one finds excellent meat dishes, as pork chops, rabbit in garlic and tomato, lamb legs and local sausages. The wines of the region are of a good class and come from the Alto Vinalopó and Marina Alta district.

The nightlife in Costa Blanca is lively and exciting. Alicante, Elche, Benidorm and Torrevieja are the most popular places with a vibrant nightlife with discos, clubs and bars. Most entertainment centers are located in the city centers. The promenades have many quality restaurants, cafés and bars. There is a special night train between Alicante and Altea for the night owls, which runs between 21.00 and 05.00. The best clubs are located between Benidorm and Altea.

Alternative options apart from the beaches and water sports are a number of attractions that can be found along the Costa Blanca:

Situated in Benidorm is the Theme Park Terra Mitica, a park with exciting rides in a setting of historic Mediterranean coasts. You travel through Egypt, Greece, Rome and the islands in a dazzling and exciting experience of speed and adrenaline.

Also in the zoo Terra Natura Benidorm is where visitors can learn about the animal species from Europe, Asia and America. There are 200 species awaiting you. Mundo Mar offers the same, but with dolphins, seals and sea lions and exotic birds.

Nature lovers can visit the Palm Grove of Elche, 23 km from Alicante. The only European Palmeral with more than 200,000 palm trees. The Arabs originally planted the forest in the tenth century.

From Alicante and Torrevieja you can take a boat to the island of Tabarca. It is a small archipelago of four islands. Tabarca is 1.8 km long and 400 meters wide, and was in earlier centuries a refuge for Berber pirates. In the 18th century, King Carlos III built reinforcements and a city.
