Costa Brava

The Costa Brava (Catalan for wild coast) is the 200 km long coast between Portbou at the French border and Blanes. The coast is wild and the foothills of the Pyrenees run into the sea. Therefore, there are many small bays with intimate beaches. Nevertheless, there are wide sandy beaches that are popular and frequently visited. Known resorts are Lloret de Mar, Blanes and Platja d'Aro. For visitors who want something more than sun and sand there are more charmed small towns at the coast like Cadaqués at the foot of the Pyrenees, with its artistic culture. Pals with its medieval center and a spacious beach is also a haven for tourists.

The most popular places on the Costa Brava are Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, Platja d'Aro and San Antonio. Sant Pere Pescador, Sant Feliu de Guixols, Pals, Llfrance and Calelle de Palafrugell are nice towns to stay as well with excellent accommodation for every budget.

The bay of Roses and Pals are the best locations for windsurfing. Sant Pere Pescador is known as the best European water ski town and is therefore a popular destination for water sports. A special experience for scuba diving one can have around the Medes islands just outside L'Estartit, the flora and fauna are a great experience in this small archipelago of seven islands.

Lloret de Mar is especially popular amongst the younger young people, there are many restaurants, cafés, pubs and discos. Malgrat de Mar is on top of the entertainment list just after Lloret. Pineda de Mar is quieter with a nice center full of nice restaurants and tapas bars. Shopping can be done anywhere along the Costa Brava. The best shopping malls are located in Girona, Roses, L'Escala, L'Estartit, Palamós, Plaja d'Aro, Lloret de Mar and Blanes. Barcelona is also not far away with an excellent selection of shops.

Museum lovers can visit the Teatro Museo Salvador Dali in Figueres. It is one of the most visited museums in Spain. Daliís surrealist art amazes still hundreds of thousands of visitors. Other museums include the Archaeological, Historical and Art Museum in Girona and Olot Garrotxa Regional Museum.

Nature lovers should definitely visit Garrotxa Volcanic National Park in Olot, a nature reserve with about thirty volcanic craters, cones and stilled lava flows. The National Park of Cap de Creus is also a great experience.
