Costa Dorada

The Costa Dorada (literally "Golden Coast") is the 216 km long coastline of Catalunya and runs from Tarragona to the mouth of the River Ebro. The Costa Dorada is known for its wide golden beaches, but also cozy towns and fishing villages. The beaches slope gradually into the sea and are therefore very popular. Salou, Cambrils and Ampolla are crowded resorts.

Cambrils, La Pineda, Mont-Roig del Camp, Salou and Sitges are the best places to stay with a wide range of good hotels, apartments and villas. Salou is high on the list of tourists for its fine hotels and bars, discos and cafes. Cambrils still breathes the atmosphere of an old fishing village. The Costa Dorada offers many opportunities for surfing, windsurfing, water skiing, jet skiing, scuba diving, canoeing, etc. The best water sports centers are located in Cambrils, Salou and Mont-Roig del Camp.

Nightlife can be found everywhere, but especially Salou has a vibrant nightlife, very popular among youngsters are the bars and the discos. The famous Passeig de les Palmeres along the Llevant beach has many good bars and outdoor cafes. Sitges has a great promenade with many restaurants and cafés. The nightlife here is also extensive. The port of Cambrils has cute little fish restaurants and nice cafés.

Tarragona, the capital of Catalonia, has many remains from the Roman era, such as the Comitium, the Amphitheatre, the Circus and an aqueduct. The medieval cathedral one should definitely visit. In the hinterland, one can make interesting trips; there are many nice villages and vineyards. Nice places are Valls, Mont Blanc and Giant. Visit the medieval monastery of Montserrat. Other monasteries are in Santa Creus and Poblet.

The Port Aventura theme park, the second largest in Europe in Salou has five themed zones full of fast rides and a lot of fun. There is also a water theme park with various attractions.

The Aquopis Aqua Park in La Pineda also offers a wide range of attractions; especially the water slides are popular.

Making pottery is amongst the ancient traditions of the towns of the Costa Dorada. Ceramics you will find a lot in Benissant, El Vendrell, La Galera, Tivenys and Torredembara. Wrought iron work, baskets and embroidery are also high on the list of the visiting tourist.
