Extremadura is an autonomous region in southwestern Spain. Merida is the capital and the region has a population of 1.1 million.

Extremadura is the "Land of the Conquerors". Hernando de Soto, Alvarado, Pizarro and Cortes were the discoverers of the Andes, Amazon and Mississippi and were born is this region.

The climate of Extremadura is Mediterranean except the northern part, where it is continental. In the west, there is the influence of the Atlantic Ocean.

Merida, the capital of the region, was once an important Roman city and there are still many Roman buildings to testify this. There is a magnificent granite bridge with 64 arches, the longest bridge ever built in Spain by the Romans and an 8 km long aqueduct and a theater, where for more than 2,000 years performances still take place.

Badajoz, near the Portuguese border, has a Moorish citadel, the Alcazaba, and many interesting museums. There are several historical monuments to admire in Badajoz.

Caceras was founded in 34 BC by the Romans, it has a beautiful old center surrounded by Moorish walls, and towers. There are several palaces built in Renaissance style. Two beautiful churches are worth a visit. The Santa Maria built in the 13th century in Gothic style and the Monastery la Compania de Jesus built in Baroque style, where art collections are exhibited.

Trujillo has a Moorish castle from the 12th century and its monument to Francisco Pizarro, who discovered the Amazon. One of the highlights of the city is the historic city wall. The wall surrounds the town and consists of 17 towers and a lookout. The wall is still in very good condition.

The monastery of Santa Maria de Guadalupe in Guadalupe was one of the most important monasteries in the country for more than four centuries. It dates from the 13th century and was initially a chapel where the statue of the Holy Image of the area found its place.
