Figueres is a municipality in the Spanish autonomous region of Catalunya. The main economical income of Figueres is tourism and especially the Dali museum.

The Teatro Museo Dalí is dedicated to the works of the surrealist master. The building was a theater from 1849 to 1939. It was partially destroyed during the bombings in the Spanish Civil War. In 1974 the Dali museum found its place in the building and is one of the most visited museums in Spain. The museum contains a collection of Daliís works from his first artistic expressions to his most famous surrealist works. Every room in the museum is a work of art itself with paintings, sculptures, furniture and decorative objects. You must especially pay attention to the surrealistic atmosphere of the Wind Palace Room and the Mae West Room, but also the Rainy Cadillac and the monument of Francesc Pujols.

There are also works exhibited by other painters such as El Greco, Modes Urgell, Ernest Meissonier, Antoni Pitxot and Evarist Vallès.

The Dali museum includes 1,500 works of Dali: paintings, drawings, sculptures, engravings, holograms, photos and much more. The Gala-Salvador Dali Foundation holds a total of 4,000 works that are distributed across multiple museums. Everything in the museum theater was designed by Dali and offers the visitor an insight in his fascinating and unique world.

Dali died in 1989 and his crypt is located in the center of the museum, a room specially adapted to include a collection of gold jewelry designed by the master.

Just outside Figueres is the Castell de Sant Ferran. This fort was built in the 18th century and it is one of the largest fortresses in Europe. The fort consists of five bastions and seven ravelins, two redoubts and an unfinished tower. The walls of the fort are five kilometers long.

There are many interesting sites in Figueres, especially in the city center and these are easily reached on foot. Whenever you get tired you can rest on one of the many benches in the squares or the parks.
