Galicia is an autonomous region in the northwest of Spain. The capital is Santiago de Compostela and the region has a population of 2.8 million inhabitants.

Galicia has a maritime climate: mild and moist. The Atlantic has a great influence on the climate. The region is much rainier but also greener than the rest of Spain. The prevailing winds and high humidity on the coast of Galicia, ensures that mist and fog frequently occur on the northwestern coast of the region.

Santiago de Compostela is one of the most important Christian pilgrimage places. Pilgrims from all over Europe terminate their hike here, the Camino de Santiago.

The Cathedral of Santiago is 97 meters long and 22 meters high. The church was built in 1077 on the remains of an earlier church from 800. The shape of the cathedral is a cruciform. The southern portal is in Romanesque style; the west portal is Baroque and Neoclassical and there is a Gothic cloister.

The Torre de Hercules in La Coruña is the oldest lighthouse in the world still in operation. Built by the Romans in the 2nd century with a tower of is 55 meters tall. From the tower you have a magnificent view over the sea and the city.

The Castillo San Antón stands at the harbor. It is a massive fortress from the 16th century in which an archaeological museum is located. You will find here plenty of antiques from the region.

Lugo is the only city in the world that is surrounded by intact Roman city walls. The walls are 10 to 15 meters high and extend over 2,117 meters. The walls date from the 3rd century and there are 71 towers and 10 gates.

In Ourense the cathedral is the most important monument. Originally built in 572 and later rebuilt in the 13th century, it is the second oldest in Galicia. The church is a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic styles. In the facade, you will find a door, the Door of Paradise, an imitation of the Door of Glory of the cathedral in Santiago.
