Gijón is located on the central coast of Asturias in northern Spain and is one of the largest ports in the north. Gijón is separated from the mainland on a peninsula with the old town situated on it apart from the beaches of Poniente and Arbeyal, the marina and the harbor El Musel. Gijón is situated not far from the other Asturian cities of Oviedo and Avilés.

Gijón has many museums, including the International Bagpipe Museum. The museum was founded in 1965 and houses the largest collection of bagpipes from Spain, but also from the rest of Europe, and Asia and Africa. There are many artifacts that are part of the Asturian music.

The beaches Playa Poniente and Playa San Lornzo are the best attractions during a holiday in Gijón, just like the Playa Serin and Playa Esataño not far from Gijón.

In the Campo Valdés in the old town you can find the excavations of the Roman Baths. These are the oldest existing buildings in the city and they attract many visitors. Through models, drawings and films you get an idea how it used to look in former days.

The Campa Torres Archaeological Park contains the remains of an ancient Roman hill fort. It is believed that some parts are more than two and half thousand years old. There is an exhibition space with a large collection of pottery and an overview of how people lived those days.

The Gijón Aquarium at the Poniente beach is the place where the sharks and otters welcome you. There are more than 500 species in 55 fresh and sea water tanks. The aquarium is one of the most famous in Europe and represents twelve different ecosystems.
