Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain. With its central location, history, political and financial functions it is considered to be the main town of the Iberian Peninsula. The city has a population of 3.2 million inhabitants.

The former emir of the Arab empire Muhammad I of Córdoba had a palace built on the spot where now stands the Palacio Real in Madrid. Madrid was an important center for art and culture during the Golden Age. The results are still visible in the architecture (Plaza Mayor) and famous paintings (Velázquez).

Modern Madrid is a vibrant, energetic and active city full of cultural activities and an incredibly lively nightlife.

Madrid is rich in art and culture. Besides the two famous museums, the Prado and Reina Sofia, there are plenty of cultural centers, theaters and flamenco venues.

The Prado is one of the largest and most famous art museums in the world. The collection includes works from the 14th to the 19th century. There are thousands of paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures. There are many works by Velázquez, Goya, Titian, Rubens and Bosch. The collection consists of works from many art movements and periods, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Spanish, Italian, Flemish, etc.

The Reina Sofia museum is not far from the Prado. This museum is more focused on Spanish art. The highlight of the collection is the hundreds of works by Picasso and Salvador Dali.

The Royal Palace (Palacio Real) is open daily for tours. The palace has a large collection of paintings and frescoes, as well as collections of antique furniture, pottery, silverware and porcelain.

Las Ventas is the largest arena of Spain and is regarded as the center of bullfighting in the country and even the world. The arena is located in the district Guindalera and was opened in 1931. The arena seats 25,000 spectators. It is built in Moorish style. The seats are divided into 10 zones, and the price varies depending on the distance to the ring and sun or shade.
