Mahon is located on the east coast of Menorca, one of the Balearic Islands. The town is the capital of the island and has a population of 29,500 inhabitants. The place has one of the deepest natural harbors in the world.

It derives its name from the Carthaginian general Mago Barca, brother of Hannibal, who sought a safe haven on the island in 205 BC. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the island became part of the Byzantine realm. In 903 it fell into the hands of the Moorish Caliphate Córdoba. In 1287 Alfonso III of Aragon captured Mahon and Menorca became part of the kingdom of Majorca.

Mahon is an interesting place which has much to offer for its visitors. The shopping streets are almost all car-free and you will find plenty of boutiques, leather goods and pottery businesses. The market is located in a former monastery, built in 1751, which has been newly renovated and is also used for music events. There are also plenty of cafés and restaurants in the narrow streets and shaded squares in the center. To port is an interesting place for shooting photographs. Have a boat trip through the harbour.

In the archaeological museum of Mahon you can find all information about the history of Menorca. Coins, pottery, utensils from some cultures are exhibited to tell their story. The museum contains the largest collection of art of the island.

North of Mahon is the Natural Park S'Albufera des Grau. The park is a two kilometer long lagoon with dunes and marshland. An interesting park with a diversity of flora and fauna.
