Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca, Palma for short, is the capital of the island of Mallorca and also of the Balearic Islands. The city has a population of 405,000 inhabitants.

The island of Mallorca was conquered by the Romans in 120 BC, who have founded the city of Palma.

In the heart of the city is the Plaza Mayor, a copy of the similar plaza in Madrid. The Plaza Mayor radiates a typical Spanish atmosphere and is surrounded by many terraces and there occurred many street artists.

The building consists of two rooms and was originally Byzantine and dates from the 11th century. The twelve columns supporting the building are of Roman origin.

On the Carrer de la Portella the Museo de Mallorca is located. The museum houses medieval paintings, archaeological objects from Roman and Moorish periods.
