Salou is a municipality in the province of Tarragona in the Spanish autonomous region of Catalunya. Already in ancient times the site was used as a port by the Greeks and Romans. In 1229 the fleet of James I of Aragon left the port here for the conquest of the Balearic Islands. Salou is considered the capital of the Costa Dorada.

Salou has enough natural attractions to offer to keep people of all ages busy. There are all kinds of water sport activities and a water park, you can try karting and there is one of Europe's most exciting theme parks. Salou is also an excellent base for excursions to the surrounding countryside and sightseeing trips to historic Tarragona.

The promenade of Salou has beautiful gardens, parks and fountains which make your walks livelier; during the evenings you can have fun in the bars, pubs, nightclubs and restaurants. There is plenty of choice of souvenir and fashion shops in Salou and if this does not satisfy your taste than you can take the train to Barcelona, to go shopping there. Every Monday there is a flea market in Salou in the old town.

PortAventura is a huge amusement park based on Bush Gardens in Florida. The park is divided into five worlds: the Far West, Mediterranae, Mexico, China and Polynesia. Visitors can walk on the Great Wall of China and wander around the ruins of the Mayas later. Popular attractions include the Sea Odyssey underwater adventure, the Stampida roller coaster and the Grand Canyon Rapids water ride. The park is open daily from 10:00 to midnight, except from 7 January until late March.

The Llevant beach is the most popular and longest of Salou, 1.2 km, a city beach with plenty of facilities and entertainment and water sports. The beach carries the blue flag for its cleanliness.

From Salou you can make nice trips on the Mediterranean Sea with a luxurious catamaran. There are day and evening trips. You can sunbathe, swim and enjoy the bar facilities.

The Torre Vella is the historic tower that was built by order of the archbishop of Tarragona Pere de Cardona in 1530. In earlier days it was a watchtower. Today it is a museum with regular exhibitions of local artists.
