Sanlúcar de Barrameda

Sanlúcar de Barrameda is a city in the northwest of the province of Cadiz in southern Spain. It is situated at the estuary of the Guadalquivir River opposite the Doñana park.

Because of Its strategic location the town was the starting point for expeditions to America between the 15th and 17th centuries.

Nowadays Sanlúcar is a tourist destination and also well known for its fine cuisine and Manzanilla sherry. The city is also known for its horse racing on the beach and flamenco music.

Sanlúcar is part of the Costa de la Luz and has some beautiful beaches surrounded by pine forests, wetlands, and of course the fertile grounds where the Manzanillagrapes grow.

Add to this the nearby Doñana national park and you have the perfect place to enjoy the sea, sun, beach and nature. The most popular beaches are Playa de Guia Bajo, Calzada, Pilates and La Jara.

The natural environment of Sanlúcar attracts many people who like hiking, biking and diving. You can have a cruise on the Guadalquivir and visit the Doñana Natural Park.

Sanlúcar is famous for its Manzanilla wine bodegas can be found everywhere in the old part of the city. There is an upper and a lower area. The first receives plenty of fresh air that directly from the sea, the low area has a more humid atmosphere. Both neighborhoods are used in the maturation process of the Manzanilla.

Sanlúcar is also known for its horse racing. The custom started 1845 and takes place along the 1.8 km long Calzada beach at the mouth of the Guadalquivir in August.
