Seville

Seville is the capital of the autonomous region of Andalusia in southern Spain. Seville is located on the Guadalquivir River and has just over 700,000 inhabitants. It is the main town in the south of Spain in the field of culture, art and economy.

Excavations indicate that the town existed as early as 1000 BC. The Phoenicians and Carthaginians conquered the city in 600 BC. The city was used as a trading center for the south of Spain. The Romans were the next conquerors and were later followed by the Visigoths and the Moors. Eventually Seville was occupied by the Spaniards in the 13th century.

The city has the largest historical center of Europe and is therefore often called an "open air museum". There are a number of churches, parks and palm gardens that you should definitely see. Numerous museums you can visit, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Modern Arts and Customs and the Archaeological Museum.

The 17th century former convent, Seville Museo de Bellas Artes, is one of the finest art galleries in Europe. It has beautiful gardens and displays a grand calmness. Art lovers can enjoy a collection of Spanish paintings, including works by Velázquez, Murillo, El Greco and Zurbarán.

The Torre del Oro (Gold Tower) is one of the most recognizable monuments of Seville. It was built by the Moors in the 13th century to protect the city against Christian invaders. In the tower is the Maritime Museum.

One of the most famous buildings of the city is the Cathedral Maria de la Sede. The largest church building in Europe after St. Peter's in Rome and St Paul's Cathedral in London and the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. The symbol of the city, the Giralda, is a part of it. This 96 meter high bell tower was originally a Moorish minaret, once the highest in the world.

Another beautiful building is the 14th century Alcázar Palace, an important example of Mudéjar architecture.

Cross the Triana bridge and escape the touristic center to taste the lively atmosphere of the Triana district. This traditional gypsy quarter reflects the passion of the famous flamenco dancing. You will not be disappointed.
