Torroella de Montgri

Torroella de Montgri is a city in the province of Girona in the Spanish region of Catalunya. Torroella is overshadowed by the Montgri Massif. This is a long mountain range of which the highest point is 308 meters with an old fort, the castle Montgri on top.

In one of the most beautiful historic buildings in the town is the Museu de la Mediterrània located. This museum shows the history of the area, the Montgri Massif, the Baix Ter plain and the Medes Islands. A panoramic video program gives an idea of everyday life in the Mediterranean. There are also temporary exhibitions and a vibrant cultural, social and musical program.

The symbol of Torroela is the Montgri castle at the top of the mountain Montgri. From there you have a great view of the Canigó, Gavarres and Montseny mountains and the Mediterranean Sea with the Medes Islands on the foreground.

In 1294, King Jaume II ordered the construction of the castle. The castle was built round a square with walls of 31 meters long and 13 meters high and a round tower at each corner. The four wings of the castle were never completed.

The Montgri Massif consists of three peaks, the Puig Anill, the Montgri with the castle and the Montplà. The total length of the massif is eight kilometers with foothills of 200 meter high like the Roca Maura and Torre Moratxa in L'Estartit.

Around the old part of the city you can find parts of old fortifications, such as the Torre de les Bruixes (witch port) from the 16th century and the Torre Santa Caterina from the 14th century. These are the only two remaining gates of the original six.
