Valencia is the capital of the province and is located on the Costa del Azahar. The city has a population of 814,000. It is also the birthplace of paella, one of the most famous dishes of Spanish cuisine.

Valencia was founded in 138 BC by the Romans. As in most places in Spain, the city was then occupied by the Visigoths, Byzantines and Moors. In 1239 it came into Spanish hands.

Around 1400 began Valencia’s Golden Age and the city grew both economically and culturally. In particular, the silk trade was important and one started to build churches and palaces. The heritage of these glory days can still be found in the city.

Valencia has a very diverse cityscape thanks to the many cultures that have resided in the city. One of the most beautiful Gothic buildings of the city is the La Lonja de la Seda, together with the Central Market and the church Iglesia de los Santos Juanes. Furthermore, the Mercado de Colón and the Estación del Norte are interesting buildings.

Of the ancient wall that protected the historic town protected there is nothing left as the Torres de Quart and the Torres de Serranos.

The Ciudad de las Artes y Ciencias is a complex of five buildings surrounded by parks and ponds. The buildings were designed by the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava and are an example of modern architecture. The complex includes an IMAX theater, a planetarium, a science museum, an aquarium complex, a botanical garden and a promenade.

Visit the former royal gardens, the Jardines del Real (also known as Los Viveros) with fragrant rose gardens, rhododendrons and beautiful sculptures, and shady green lawns. This is the ideal place for a stroll or a picnic.

Valencia is also an ideal place for a beach visit. There are some beautiful golden beaches with plenty of sunshine, clear blue water and a pleasant breeze. Valencia has a total of 26 km of beaches, some close to the city center like Playa de Malvarrosa and Playa las Arenas Playa de Cabanyal. There are good tram connections to the beaches.
